Running the race of God

“Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right before you. Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; remove your foot from evil.”

Proverbs 4:25–27.

The moment we’re born into this world, we get enrolled in the races of life. In this life, we run different kinds of races — political, careers, education, businesses, projects etc. We run to fulfil our desires and of those who have inscribed us to the races and to please them. Yet, we never get fully satisfied because as long as we’re alive, we’ll continue running until that point when we breath our last.

Once we’re born again, (accept Jesus Christ as our saviour), we right away get inscribed in a different kind of race. A race of faith whose author and finisher is our Lord Jesus Christ. We must then run this race according to the instructions given by the author.

We shouldn’t run our way or according to the dictates of this world— our teachers, parents, politicians, friends, employers… etc. It isn’t our race nor the world’s, it’s God’s. Consequently, each must run with endurance to the finish line looking to the one who set the race before us.

“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Hebrews 12:1-2.

There are no shortcuts to any place worth going to. We must stay focused on Jesus to take us to the destination but not on the negativities and evils happening around us. We must stay focused on the gold at the finish line but not on the ephemeral glitters the world promises and offers. Because the value of the prize far surpasses that of all things we can ever amass in our lifetime on earth.

When our main concern is the things happening around us — what we’re seeing and hearing, we’re going to carry loads too heavy to bear. We’re going to be distracted, carried away and brought down to earth so we won’t move. Because the world is saturated with untold junk and fake promises and those who put their hope in them end up in misery.

Yet, the world and all that is in it is passing away, but God’s word endures forever. This world is not our eternal home. All its ‘goodies’ and griefs are passing away with it. Our home is a Kingdom which cannot be shaken, where we shall abide forever.

“And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”

1 John 2:17

For those who put their hope in Jesus, reaching the finish line is guaranteed. Because they are not running this race alone. Jesus is directing the way, they’re following.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”

Proverbs 3:4–5.

When you find yourself in a state of uncertainty, hopelessness or worry, remove your focus from yourself and the world, shift it to Jesus and He’ll take you to the finish line. You’ll reach there because God Himself has been there!

“Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure”

Isaiah 46:10.

Amen! Keep the faith.
